Trainee Information

Ready to start your journey as a Grip? Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying, training, and progressing through the Grips Branch Trainee Scheme.

Application & Training Path

1 / Applying
  • Join BECTU: Before applying to become a trainee, first join BECTU. Once you have your membership number, use the application button at the bottom of this page to submit your trainee application.

  • Application Review: After applying, our team will review your application and contact you with next steps.

2 / What to expect

As a trainee, your journey will last approximately three years or 400 shoot days, with a strong emphasis on health and safety. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Health & Safety Training: You’ll receive in-depth safety information from the Grips you're working with, covering essential aspects of on-set work, from manual handling to working at heights. Safety is paramount in the Grip profession—your training will ensure that you’re prepared to protect both yourself and your colleagues.

  • Hands-on Experience: We provide a platform to advertise opportunities from Grips looking for Trainees, but this scheme does not employ you. You are responsible for getting your own work through networking.

  • Visit Rental Houses: Familiarise yourself with the equipment, floor maintenance, and daily operations. Spend time at rental houses, ask questions, and gain practical knowledge on how to handle and maintain the gear.

3 / The Online Log Book

You’ll keep an Online Log Book throughout your traineeship to:

  • Record your experiences and skills as a trainee

  • Track your progress for your Level 2 qualifications portfolio

  • Provide evidence for your Assessment Day

The Online Log Book will be an invaluable resource, documenting your development and readiness for each next step.

4 / Assessment

When you’re confident in your skills and ready to advance, apply for your practical assessment:

  • Location: The assessment takes place at a rental house and is conducted by a group of Level 3 Grips, organised by the committee.

  • Purpose: This practical test is designed to validate your competence and readiness to take on professional responsibilities.

Once you pass, you’ll receive your Basic Grip Skills Certificate. This certificate marks the completion of your traineeship and the beginning of your professional career as a Grip.

5 / Progressing to Level 2

With the Basic Grips Skills Certificate in hand, you’re officially ready to begin working on professional productions as a Grip. Your next goal will be to achieve the Level 2 Grip Qualification, further proving your ability to meet the industry’s high standards. The Grips Branch will continue to support you as you progress in your career.
